Trees, especially in residential areas, can present a number of issues which need to be addressed. Sometimes these are associated with age or stress to the tree, sometimes they are due to the tree being planted in the wrong place. Some other issues can arise when the area around the tree is being used for something new, or simply because the tree has outgrown its environment.
Some regular issues that we come across are:
- Creating excessive shade over gardens, parking areas, lawns or homes
- Tree roots causing damage to buildings, underground services and paved surfaces (including highways)
- Inadequate clearance over a public highway or footpath
- Risk of branches breaking and falling onto parking areas, paths and public areas
- Concern over stability/safety of the tree.
All tree owners have a duty of care to undertake reasonable actions to ensure that their trees do not cause problems to owners or users of neighbouring land, as well as to users of their own land. This includes trees which are next to roads or public footpaths/bridleways.
Some trees are covered by a Tree Preservation Order or conservation area. These regulations both exist to protect trees and they do not necessarily prevent work from being undertaken, they simply mean that work needs to be proposed and justified to the local authority. In these cases, we are able to apply for appropriate permissions or to notify the local authority prior to any work being carried out.
Our tree work is carried out in accordance with British Standard 3998:2010, which focuses on work being carried out in a proper manner, with minimum detriment to the tree.

Some sites lend themselves to creation of habitat piles, where some or all branches are piled and then reduced with a saw into a compact pile which provides good invertebrate and fungi habitat and can be particularly valuable in woodland or wildlife-friendly gardens.
